If you have horizontal blinds covering the window in your bedroom and one of the slats is broken, replace it with a new slat by following a few, basic steps. After you are finished with the repair, clean the blinds and they will look as good as new.

Use The Following Materials

  • flat head screwdriver
  • replacement slat
  • soapy water
  • vinegar
  • lint free cloth
  • spray bottle
  • duster
  • tarp

Remove The Broken Slat

The lift cords are the thick strings that raise the slats, starting at the bottom. The plugs that are covering the end of each string are located underneath the bottom slat. Remove the plugs by prying them off with the edge of a flat head screwdriver. The ends of each cord will be knotted. Remove the knots and pull the cords upwards until you reach the slat that is damaged. Once the damaged slat is released from the lift cords, it will slide right out.

Insert the replacement slat by sliding it into the proper position. Insert the lift cords through the holes on each side of the slat and work your way downwards, running the cords through the holes in each slat until the ends of both strings are underneath the bottom slat. Tie a knot in each string. Cover the knots with the plugs and press them down firmly against the underside of the bottom slat to secure them.

Clean The Blinds

Place a tarp under the blinds to collect any dust that falls off of them as you are cleaning. Adjust the slats so that they are horizontal and there is an opening between each one. Wipe the top and bottom of each slat with a duster, moving it across the slats from left to right. Add equal parts of mild detergent, vinegar, and water to a spray bottle. Apply a few squirts of the cleaning solution to a lint free cloth. Wipe the cloth over the top and bottom of each slat to remove any dirt that remains. Use a dry cloth to wipe the top and bottom of each slat.

Continue To Care For The Blinds

Your blinds will look just as good as they did when they were first installed. Continue to care for them by dusting them off regularly and trying not too pull too hard on the lift cords when you are opening or closing them. Practicing these steps will help them last for many years.
